    • On July 26th, MERL hosted its annual Women in Science luncheon. This event brings together MERL's female interns and employees to hear about the experiences and careers of women working in research and engineering fields. This year, we were honored to have Dr. Na Li as our guest speaker. Dr. Li, who joined MERL as a visiting faculty this summer, is a Winokur Family Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics at Harvard University. Dr. Li's talk highlighted her personal journey from rural China to Harvard Professor. Her insights and experiences provided invaluable inspiration to everyone in attendance. We appreciate both Dr. Li and all who participated in making this event a success. MERL remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment that supports the growth and development of women in STEM.

    • MERL hosted its annual Women in Science luncheon. Carole-Jean Wu, PhD, joined our event to lead a talk on Scaling AI Computing Sustainably. She shared key challenges across the many dimensions of AI, on what and how at-scale optimization can help reduce the overall carbon footprint of AI and computing. Dr. Wu is a Research Scientist and Technical Lead Manager at Meta AI / FAIR. Prior to Meta/Facebook, she was an Associate Professor at ASU.

      As part of this celebration, MERL will be making a donation to Science Club for Girls in Cambridge, MA.

      Science Club for Girls' mission is to foster excitement, confidence, and literacy in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for girls and gender-expansive youth from underrepresented communities by providing free, experiential programs and by maximizing meaningful interactions with women-in-STEM mentors.

    • MERL hosted its annual "Women In Science Luncheon" to celebrate and inspire the Lab's team of female researchers, PhD student interns and members of the HQ staff. Beverly Shultz, author of "Skip the Typing Test, I’ll Manage the Software-A Woman’s Pioneering Journey in High Tech” joined the event to share her insights as a successful female engineer, who brought passion and technology business acumen to the male-dominated computer revolution.

      Beverly was a former Vice President of Engineering at Mitsubishi Electric of America and responsible to produce several versions of an early volume rendering product. She was the first female recipient of the MELCO’s President’s Award for Technology, for this work.

    • We hosted the 4th Annual "Women in Science at MERL," event on July 19th. This year we celebrated the contributions of the eleven female interns, three female researchers, and some female members of HQ staff. MERL executives, managers and researchers participated in the event. MERL's interns and researchers were asked probing questions about how they are fulfilled in their work and how they facilitate innovation. This resulted in every participant feeling as though they were moving their field of science forward. Everyone left feeling inspired.

    • To celebrate "Women in Science at MERL," a luncheon event was organized on August 4. Eleven female interns, three female researchers, and female members of HQ staff, interns, hosts/managers and MERL executives participated in that event. All female interns introduced their research projects and their positive experiences at MERL; female researchers shared their own career development stories; and at the end all discussed how to be successful in the field of science. Every participant was inspired to continue contributing to the future of science.
